Blair links Iran to brutal act of terror

The Prime Minister pointed the finger of suspicion at Iran last night for the deaths of four British soldiers in a roadside bombing in Basra yesterday.

The Army experienced one of its deadliest days since the invasion of Iraq when the soldiers - two men and two women - were killed by a "colossal" blast.

The tragedy occurred at 2am local time yesterday just hours before the 15 Royal Navy prisoners took off from Teheran. Tony Blair contrasted the rejoicing at the release of the sailors and Royal Marines after 13 days with the "sober and ugly reality" of the killings in Iraq. He also appeared to link Iran to the attacks.

"It's far too early to say that the particular terrorist act that killed our forces was an act committed by terrorists who were backed by any elements of the Iranian regime, so I make no allegation in respect of that particular incident.

"But the general picture, as I have said before, is there are elements at least of the Iranian regime that are backing, financing, arming, terrorism in Iraq."
