The Senators' comments are taken from Thursday's Senate Judiciary Oversight hearing on the firing of eight US Attorneys. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is the committee's main witness. The following are excerpts from the hearing:




Senators' comments:

Sen Leahy: The Dept of Justice should never be reduced to another political arm of the White House.... There is mounting evidence of improper actions...if you have nothing to hide then the White House should stop hiding it....

Sen Specter: This is a reconfirmation hearing...

Sen Schumer: This is a predicament of the Attorney General's own making...Who's running the Department?...

Sen Kennedy: Documents don't show any clear rational for the firings..

Sen Kohl: Many Americans wonder what is the rational for you to continue as Attorney General...
